It’s long been taboo to discuss money and salary among family and friends, but even more so at work. Luckily, stagnant generational patterns are fading and workplace policies are changing.

Nicole Babel started her coaching business after a successful career coaching sales people and leading teams. She loves to work with 20 and 30 somethings to help them negotiate all the life that happens in those years.

As the founder of From Broke 2 Baller in Columbus, Ohio, she is well versed in how to appropriately bring up topics like pay equality, the gender wage gap, and asking for a raise at work. In today's episode, we’re getting cozy with those previously uncomfortable conversations, thanks to Nicole!

Nicole talks about:

  • How each different generation, from Baby Boomers, to GenX, to Millennials are gradually becoming more open to conversations about money and why.

  • The transformation she’s witnessed in the perspective of young men toward equity because they understand that as women rise to equality, the entire family reaps the rewards.

  • What to say and how to keep the conversation with HR or your supervisor focused on you if you do find out someone makes more than you.

Any time you’re vying for a bonus or raise, interviewing for a new position, or approaching management about a pay increase for any reason, do your homework. Check glassdoor.com and salary.com to see what similar positions earn. Talk with mentors, supervisors, and colleagues using Nicole’s tips to set yourself up for a successful, non-defensive conversation to every extent possible.

A few highlights::

  • Her experience with an entire team of Millennials has provided a refreshing, unprecedented level of openness and freeness about pay, equality, levels of responsibility, and discussion of these previously taboo workplace topics. [3:22]

  • Consider the culture of the company, the relationships you have (or don’t) with coworkers and supervisors, and the trust you’ve built with them before asking about their salary. It’s important to think through how you might feel and what difference it will make whether they tell you a higher or lower number. [7:06]

  • The laws governing salary conversations, what potential employers can and can’t ask during an interview, and how to cleverly avoid the mistake of revealing your past or hopeful salary numbers. [13:01]
