You’ve likely heard the term “money mindset” thrown around.

But what does it really mean, and how does it affect our relationships?

Luckily, our guest is Certified Divorce Specialist & Financial Therapy Association member Christine Luken! She has coached hundreds of high-earning professionals toward paying off staggering amounts of debt and massively increasing their wealth through the Financial Dignity® Movement.

Christine is known as the Financial Lifeguard and is an expert on money, mindset, and emotions. This season is about communication, and you might be surprised about how much your money mindset affects this!

In this episode, Christine shares:

  • How we learned to interact with our family of origin, with those experiences forming our money blueprint at an extremely young age (around 7!);

  • How that may affect our interactions with money, and therefore our relationships, too;

  • How to create awareness about your money mindset + the questions to ask to learn about your spouse’s money mindset; and,

  • A nifty trick to stop emotional online spending.

When you uplevel your self-awareness and understanding, you’ll be better able to navigate financial tension, manage each other's triggers, and problem-solve amicably!

A few highlights:

  • Our brains’ natural tendency toward efficiency has made it so that you don’t typically think about how you tie your shoes. Relatedly, you don’t usually notice every financial trigger, emotion, opinion, or reaction. These behaviors were learned as a kid, and it takes intentional recall to learn why you do what you do. [4:27]

  • The first step to uncovering buried money beliefs is to bring them into awareness. From there, ask “is this opinion/thought/assumption even true?” [8:57]

  • Your partner deserves your engagement (and vice versa) in financial conversations and decisions because even if your relationship doesn’t last, your relationship with money is forever. You either can pretend it doesn’t exist or you can improve it. [25:09]
